Working out a budget does not have to be complicated and will help you take charge of your money. Knowing where your money comes from and where it goes is a good starting point to achieving your goals.

Want to start?

Use our linked budget planner and follow the steps below. Feel free to experiment as there are no hard and fast rules.

Putting your budget together

STEP 1: PICK A TIMEFRAME

This is influenced by the basis on which you plan to use it - weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

STEP 2: ESTIMATE YOUR INCOME

Stick to regular income such as wages and interest on savings and use after-tax figures if you can.

STEP 3: ESTIMATE YOUR EXPENSES

Sample categories are included; although blank spaces are also provided. Remember to include loan and credit card repayments and include any planned savings such as an expense.

STEP 4: REVIEW AND PLAN

Is the result what you were expecting? Revisit your estimates if it's not. If your expenses exceed your income then you need to cut back on some of the extras.

STEP 5: TRACKING

Keep track of your expenses and adjust them if you need to.
